Helen Augusta (Bark) ship's log, 1852-1854.

The Helen Augusta ship's log records a complete whaling voyage from Holmes Hole, Martha's Vineyard to the South Atlantic Ocean whaling grounds, June 23, 1852 to March 12, 1854. Daily entries record the date, location, sailing conditions, riggings used, whaling activity, and sightings of other ships. The log contains inventories of sperm oil, whale oil, and whalebone. The log also includes entries from another voyage made by Captain Charles West on board the Liverpool (ship) bound for the Arctic Sea. The Liverpool had sailed out of New Bedford, Mass. The entries for this partial log commence March 13, 1850 and abruptly end mid-sentence on June 3, 1850.
